Building services you can feel working but cannot hear.
What is MEP acoustics?
MEP acoustics is the control of noise and vibration produced by a building's mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment. It covers the sound travelling down ducts, breaking out of plant rooms, radiating from outdoor units and passing into the structure as vibration.
Equipment-specific pages cover HVAC acoustics, FAHU and AHU noise and generator rooms. Our MEP acoustic contractors install attenuators and isolators.
Mechanical plant is the most common source of noise complaints in finished buildings, and almost always the cheapest to deal with at design stage. As MEP acoustics consultants we take the equipment schedule and layouts from the MEP designer, calculate the noise reaching each occupied room and each boundary, and specify what is needed to meet the target.
HVAC noise control includes duct attenuator selection, air velocity limits, terminal and grille noise checks and plant room wall and door ratings. Vibration isolation is specified for chillers, pumps, fans and pipework, with spring and rubber mounts chosen for each machine. We prepare the noise calculation for chillers, AHUs and generators that consultants and authorities ask for.
Detailed topics have their own pages: HVAC acoustics, FAHU and AHU acoustics and generator room acoustics. The service belongs to our acoustic consultant practice and works hand in hand with our HVAC consultant team. Supply and installation of attenuators, enclosures and isolators is offered by MEP acoustic contracting.
MEP Acoustics services
Each has its own page with scope, deliverables and common questions.
What's included
Duct-borne noise calculations
Fan noise followed through the duct system to each room.
Attenuator selection
Silencer sizes and positions with pressure drop checked.
Plant room breakout
Wall, slab and door ratings to contain equipment noise.
Vibration isolation
Mounts, hangers and inertia bases specified per machine.
Outdoor plant noise
Chiller and condenser noise at neighbours and boundaries.
Commissioning measurements
Noise levels verified once the system is running.
When to call us
You do not need a finished brief. If any of these sounds familiar, let's talk.
- Occupants can hear the AC, pumps or lifts.
- Equipment is being selected and you want noise checked first.
- A reviewer has asked for MEP noise calculations.
How we work
Brief and survey
We review drawings, visit the site where needed and agree the scope and the standard to design to.
Calculate
We run the calculations and record the inputs and assumptions so they can be checked.
Design and document
Drawings, schedules and a clear report, issued for your review.
Support through approval and site
We answer review comments and stay available while the work is built.
Where we work
- Offices and fit-outs
- Residential towers and villas
- Hotels and restaurants
- Malls and retail
- Hospitals and clinics
- Factories and plant rooms

MEP Acoustics: questions, answered
How is HVAC noise reduced?
By selecting quieter equipment, keeping air velocities sensible, fitting attenuators and isolating vibration. Which matters most depends on the path the noise takes.
What noise level should an office or bedroom have from building services?
Design targets are normally given as NC or NR ratings, or dBA, and depend on room type. We agree the criterion before calculating.
Can a noisy rooftop chiller be treated after installation?
Usually yes, with screens, enclosures, attenuators or isolation, but options are more limited than at design stage.
What causes noise from MEP systems?
Fans, pumps, chillers, generators and airflow in ducts and pipes create airborne noise and vibration that travels through the structure into occupied spaces.
At what stage should MEP acoustics be checked?
At design stage, when equipment is selected and plant room positions are fixed. Swapping to a quieter fan or adding a silencer on paper costs little; adding it after the ceiling is closed can mean rebuilding ductwork.
